I am a Dutch artist living in Hove who sculpts primarily in wood which is then painted, mixing up my own colours with linseed oil and pigment bought from an 18th century pigment-producing windmill in the Netherlands. Modern versus traditional. The paint is applied following the contours of the wood.
Often my work deals with the challenge of creating a balance between the way the weight of the sculpture is distributed versus the need for the piece to be able to stand on its own, using minimal floor surface.
My work also comes about as a reaction to the influences of technology and globalisation in today’s world and the loss of craft and traditional skills.
Having grown up and studied cabinet-making in Amsterdam, I then moved to the UK where I worked in museums and galleries; preparing, hanging and installing exhibitions, and also as an assistant in artists’ studios (e.g. Barry Flanagan).
I studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, and then re-trained in design technology and worked in various London schools.
I have had exhibitions in Amsterdam, London, Hastings and Brighton.
